Relationship between farmer characteristics, farmer behavior, and the role of agricultural extension workers on the adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation practices in Monta District, Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara

Shallot productivity in Monta District, Bima Regency, has experienced fluctuations, which are presumed to be associated with the low adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation package. This study aimed to analyze the effects of farmer characteristics, farmer behavior, and the role of agricultural extension workers on the adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation package in Monta District, Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The research was purposively conducted in four villages, namely Baralau, Sakuru, Monta, and Tangga. A total of 92 farmers were selected as respondents using the proportional random sampling method. This study employed a quantitative approach with a survey method, and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results revealed that farmer characteristics had a positive and significant effect on the adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation package (coefficient = 0.286; p-value = 0.021). Farmer behavior also exerted a positive and significant effect (coefficient = 0.237; p-value = 0.040). Furthermore, the role of agricultural extension workers showed the strongest positive and significant influence (coefficient = 0.407; p-value = 0.000), indicating that it was the most dominant factor in promoting the adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation package. The findings suggest that strengthening the capacity of agricultural extension workers, improving farmer characteristics and behavior, and implementing more intensive, participatory, and farmer-oriented extension programs are essential strategies for enhancing the adoption of the recommended shallot cultivation package, thereby supporting higher productivity and the sustainability of shallot farming in Monta District.
